Who Makes a Great Candidate for Implants?

Research shows that smiling can have a positive impact on a person’s mental health—so what happens when you’re too embarrassed to smile?

Dental problems such as missing teeth can make people avoid smiling, going out in public or even going to work. At The Smile Factory, our team of highly skilled Broadmeadow dentists offers a variety of options to help restore your smile. For missing teeth, implants are often the preferred solution.

What Are They?

An implant is a titanium post that is placed in the jaw bone, where it fuses with the bone to create an artificial tooth “root.” There are single-unit implants that are covered with a crown to replace one tooth, as well as All-On-4 implants, which are used to anchor a bridge for the whole arch. Because they are permanently anchored, implants are the closest thing to natural teeth.

Who Can Get Implants?

An implant may be an option for you, provided your jaw has stopped growing. Single-unit implants are often recommended for younger adults who have lost a tooth due to an accident or injury. Single-unit and All-On-4 may be an option for seniors who have lost teeth to disease.

There is no upper age limit for receiving this type of restoration. However, your overall health must be reasonably good, as you will undergo surgery. In addition, there must be sufficient jaw bone to support the implant. If you lack adequate bone, grafts may be necessary before we can proceed with the implant surgery.

Implants vs Dentures

Implants can also be ideal for patients who prefer a fixed, permanent solution as opposed to removable restorations like dentures. Since implants are anchored in place and designed to match your natural teeth, they feel more “real,” and you can talk, chew and smile comfortably—no matter what you eat!
