The symptoms of inflammation in this joint can be acute or chronic. Your jaw might click, be painful when chewing or can’t open all the way. The symptoms commonly experienced by sufferers of TMD include
- Anxiety and depression
- Continual tiredness
- Irritable stomach
- Poor concentration
- Poor sleep
- Sensitive immune system
- Headaches and migraines
- Ear pain or numbness
- Pain behind the eyes or in the neck
Understanding the TMJ: Structure and Function
The treatment usually involves using an orthotic during the day and another at night. You may also have exercises, physical therapy or look at nutrition and the appropriate medication. You may also have a nose or sinus issue that is blocking your airway and causing TMD. If so, we work with other practitioners to make sure that you receive the treatment you need. These include physiotherapists, ear nose and throat specialists and physiotherapists.
