Gum Disease Treatment at The Smile Factory

Smiling man with glassesHealthy gums are the building blocks for a healthy smile, which is why we also offer treatments to prevent, manage, and eradicate gum disease. Sadly, gum disease can affect patients of all ages, causing inflammation, pain, bad breath, and even tooth loss. In its early stages, gum disease is highly treatable, however as it progresses, it can lead to more serious complications. Therefore, it’s important that you seek our professional help for gum disease if concern arises.

Gum disease begins as a build-up of plaque along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky coating containing bacteria, which can cause your gums to become red and inflamed.

Without treatment, this gum disease-causing bacteria multiplies, making the condition worsen over time.

Two Main Types of Gum Disease

Periodontitis

This is an advanced stage of gum disease which can occur when gingivitis is not treated. It causes the gum margin (the part of the gum that seals to the tooth) to weaken and spaces form between the tooth and the gum. This allows bacteria to travel down into these pockets, causing further pain, inflammation, and infection. As the disease progresses, it breaks down the surrounding bone structure, causing teeth to become loose and require extraction.

Gingivitis

This is the early and reversible stage of gum disease. It is usually preventable with good oral hygiene habits (such as brushing your teeth and gums – and flossing – day and night), as well as with regular check-ups and cleans at your dentist. At this stage, there is no damage to the deeper parts of the gums, teeth or bone.
