Advanced Services

advancedBy using a combination of general and preventative dentistry, we hope to keep most of our patients’ teeth and gums in great condition. For many people this will be all that is required, but occasionally you may need more advanced services. One such service offered by The Smile Factory is the diagnosis and treatment for TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder and bruxism.

About TMJ and Bruxism

Bruxism is the correct term for clenching and grinding, a common condition that can occur during sleep, particularly if you feel stressed. Bruxism can cause extensive damage to your teeth and gums and also to your temporomandibular joints. If you wake up with sore, aching teeth or a sore jaw that may be difficult to open and close then it’s possible you may have bruxism. Other symptoms include facial pain that can extend down into your neck and shoulders and waking up with chronic headaches. Your jaw may also make a clicking or popping sound when you move it.

When you visit our dental practice, our dentist can soon diagnose bruxism and will gently examine your jaw joints to see if you have temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ. Often this problem can be simply treated by making you a custom-made night guard or night splint. This is made from clear plastic and usually fits over your upper teeth, preventing them from coming into contact with your lower teeth so you cannot clench and grind.

CEREC

In the past, getting a new crown meant at least two visits to our dental practice, but now with the latest CEREC technology you will only need to see us once. With this treatment, your tooth can be prepared and your new crown made and fitted in just one comfortable appointment. The technology used for this system produces high quality, custom-designed crowns that look and feel amazing.

How Does CEREC Work?

The first part of the procedure is exactly the same as for a conventional crown. We will shape your tooth, removing all decay and damaged areas ready for your new crown. Unlike ordinary crowns, we do not need to take an impression of your tooth, a process that has many inaccuracies. Instead, it is scanned using an intra oral scanner which is highly accurate, a procedure that is quick and comfortable.

Dr Hitesh will use the scan to design your crown, before selecting a block of pre-shaded porcelain that closely matches your natural tooth. The design is then used to mill your crown from this block of porcelain, a process that is incredibly precise. Once the crown has been milled, it is hand finished and is glazed or polished. At this stage it is ready to be tried in a fitted, before being bonded into place.

Advantages of CEREC

With CEREC, you will receive a highly quality, precision-fitted crown that is extremely durable while providing great aesthetic results. You will not need a dental impression and there is no need to worry about wearing a temporary crown. You’ll save time by only needing a single appointment.
